A FRESH APPROACH TO NEIL SIMON’S ‘CHAPTER 2’
San Antonio, TX (January 21, 2013) – Inspired by his difficulty committing to his second marriage after the death of his first wife, Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical play, ‘Chapter 2’, is a delicately written dramatic comedy about a man trying to come to terms with death rather than a new life.
‘Chapter 2’ mines the emotional challenges of surviving the loss of a great love and partner and the scary re-entry into the dating scene at middle age. Simon creates humor from the lives and troubles of four flawed, however likeable people. The play is considered one of Simon’s finest works, and with it, he achieved both audience and critical acclaim. In this modern retelling of the play, Director Vivienne Elborne has masterfully crafted a thoughtful show with rich characters we all can immediately identify with.
Featuring some of San Antonio’s most notable figures, including Honorable Philip Kazen, Chief Assistant Criminal District Attorney Catherine Babbitt, Assistant District Attorney Catherine Hayes, and Woodlawn Theatre’s Artistic Director Greg Hinojosa, the story involves George Scneider (Kazen), a recently widowed writer who is introduced to soap opera actress Jennie Malone (Babbitt) by his press agent brother Leo (Hinojosa) and her best friend Faye (Hayes).
Jennie’s unhappy marriage to a football player dissolved after six years, leaving her uncertain if she’s ready to start dating again. And George is still conflicted over the haunting memories of his first wife. Will they find some way to overcome their grief together, or will the past threaten the very beginnings of a new romance?
